Posting to Social Media Like an Amateur Golfer?

Tips On Social Media PostingI’m terrible at golf! If you’re wonderful at golf, congratulations! For me, that little white ball taunts me and goes everywhere I don’t want it to go.

I’m told there are four main reasons why I’m not doing do well with golf:

  1. I’m swinging too hard. I hit that ball so hard, it’s like I’m trying to skin it. I see this in social media all the time. People are posting either too much, just for the sake of it – or they’re posting all business sales posts. People aren’t going to be receptive to a sales message all the time. Because it’s social media, people are in their social headspace, so they are looking to connect with friends and family, have a laugh etc. They may not be open to sales as much so make sure you mix the content up with different types of content, funny posts, inspiring quotes etc., which are relevant to your brand.
  2. I’m using the wrong clubs. Golfers cringe when this happens. Imagine if someone used a drive when they should really use a sand wedge. This happens in social media as well. Make sure you’re talking to the right person, on the right platform. On Instagram, content is very image-based but on Facebook, you can be humorous, you can share links to your site and to articles etc. LinkedIn however, really requires a professional approach and tone.
  3. Poor timing. Apparently my timing’s off when it comes to my swings. The ball has no hope of getting to where I want it to go. Are you posting at the right time of day? To know when the right time of day to post for your customer is, you really need to know your target market. If you’re hoping to speak to school mums, 7am may not be the right time. But if you’re speaking to people commuting to the city, 7am might be perfect, while they’re on the train, scrolling on their phone.
  4. Poor alignment. When it comes to me and golf, alignment is not even in the ballpark. How about you? Are you saying and sharing things that are helpful, interesting and entertaining for your customers? If you’re just posting for the sake of posting, too salesy or irrelevant, people will switch off.
